Fishing Reports November early December 2011

Been out fishing with clients a fair amount even with the high water. We have had some fantastic days with almost no other anglers around. Still swinging flies with good results.
The Bighead has been off the chart with fish.. It's amazing that little river get soooo many fish.
The Saugeen in every section is fishing well now that water levels are dropping to 11.
I am still offering trips and also Gift certificates for the "hard to buy for anglers "in the Family..
I've been doing a fair amount of Filming with the Mad fisher Dudes, I'll have a few commercials ready for the website soon!!
Wanting to know whats going on in the Saugeen??? I'm a pro staffer for Fishhound, Fishhound.com. I do weekly reports on conditions. Just type in Saugeen river Ontario.

Fishing report Fall 2011

Just an FYI, I do regular updates on "Fishhound" for the Saugeen river.
It's been a great fall season, lots of fish on the swing. With the current heavy rain and cold temps we should have a new bunch of fish entering the systems.
I've got openings for the fall season, give me a call or drop and info request on the web site if you're looking to get out.
I'll be at Hook, Line and Sinker this Saturday doing a tying demo , I'll be tying Musky flies and talking about the Joys of Guiding!! Too funny!!

With the Storms last night the river is dirty and rising.The Upper river did get a substantial amount of rain and has less than 3 inches Vis this morning.
Looks like I'll be doing some re-booking for this weekend...

Finally some much needed rain, although not sure if it will be enough to change levels in the upper Saugeen and other headwaters. I'm still not doing any trout guides in this area, but with the cooler nights, I may have to do a quick "drive around" and temp taking.
Bass and Musky/Pike have held up pretty good this year. Good numbers of fish and some heavy smallies around...
On another note, I feel for the residents of Goderich and surrounding area. We got hit 2 years ago with an F2 (200km winds), nothing compared to an F3!!
If you can spare a few dollars please help them out, you can't believe the hassles these people will face with the insurance company's..not many people carry wind insurance.. let alone know that they should like us.

Fishing report August 2011

Man, I hate August!! The levels in the Saugeen headwaters are so low! Some sections have no flow.. still water!

The Middle section has been avoided like a bad case of crabs!! Too much pressure for my liking!

The lower section is great, good temps in some sections, great top water and big streamer action.

Have had many great days. Hooked the biggest Musky ever, lost it to a tree, landed another big big fish. lots of average fish, good to see. Looking forward to the guides coming up.

Got openings, still holding off on courses and trout fishing until we get some rain .

White t-shirt, average fish... Grey t-shirt 50 inch fish at 20 lbs!

Gotta Love Doug, he wasn't all that impressed until later!

Fishing report- July 2011

The rivers in and around Markdale have hit dangerous temps for angling trout. Water levels are at August lows and I wouldn't recommend fishing them.
The Main Saugeen (Bass and Musky/Pike)waters are at 80 + temps and fishing well. Flow is good as is Clarity. Been out on all drifts doing well.Had the Largest Musky of the year on yesterday. It was all the 10 wt could do to handle this massive fish. Unfortunately we lost it to a submerged tree.
Top water action has been slow on all drifts. We can use the rain in the forecast over the next 24-48 hours. I'll be on the river doing an overnight trip this weekend. Weather looks good, should be a fun weekend for these first time fly fishers.
August is pretty much booked up and I'm starting to book steelhead trips for this fall.
I've got some new Steelhead water I'm looking forward to fishing this fall.

Not so much a fishing report but a rant!
So, I've tied up a new Mouse pattern and was headed down to the Rocky to try it out . Let me say this,I am so disgusted by the lack of respect for our natural resources. Yes, I realize fishing in this area is done mostly by beer drinking idiots that can carry a 6 pack in, but can't seem to find room to pack it out!! WTF!!! Not only beer cans but broken liquor bottles smashed right on the trail, worm boxes, cigarette butts..ya I smoke,but I rip the filter off and put the filter in my pocket until I get home and put them in the garbage..
So,I know that virtually everybody that reads this is a responsible person... not sure what I need to do to get people to be a little more environmentally sensitive...
Anyway, didn't try the Mouse.... I'll do it on another river.

Fishing report Spring 2011

Funny thing.... I'm not dead!! Yes, I'm still guiding and doing a pretty good amount of it!

In all seriousness, I'm still getting questions if I'm still guiding.. yes.. yes I am.

I've heard plenty of rumors and stories, some are pretty ugly. Not going to get into details,I'm okay busy with the house when I can fit it in. Val and I should be living in the house by July.

So, we've had a lot of high water, it's kept me off the river for a few days. Had some good trip and some bad trips, mostly due to conditions.I have this thing where I won't take clients out if the chances are slim.. so I don't.

The Brook tout sections of the Saugeen are heavily fished this year. Too many fish leaving in plastic bags, lots of garbage left stream side... gotta wander why the land owners are getting upset??

If I could ask for one thing... it would be to have all fishermen ask for permission before fishing private property.

I'm sure if someone walked through your back yard .. you'd be out in a heartbeat asking what and why the hell are you on my property?? Keep that in mind..although I highly doubt that most of the people I see are looking at my blog!

I've been lucky to have a few repeat clients out again this year, The most recent was Graham.

Graham is a "salt of the earth" kinda guy. You couldn't ask for a better person to hang out with for a day. He's a good caster, a great guy and a hell of an angler overall.

We've done a drift to get him some good Brown trout before, but this year it all came together.

The day started slow, we had a few fish come to the fly but not eat. That was until the sun went down a bit and darkness was just an hour away. Using streamers, I had Graham casting to heavy wooded structure. Deep pools with moderate flow seemed to be the key. At one section of the river I had some good success in,I warned Graham about "high probability" water ahead.. and it was, shortly after his second cast he hooked a Brown , I didn't see anything of the fish but did see the rod pound down and the obvious signs of heavy head shakes from a good fish.. then off. The fish was gone.. Graham being Graham.. looked at me shook his head and started casting again.. It wasn't too long before he set on another good fish. This one's bigger he said.. again a few head shakes and gone...

So, two big fish out of the same pool.. "we should go" I said.. find another pool that has a hungry fish.. not 20 minutes later he's into a fish of a life time.. This brown hit so hard and fast! Graham did everything right, it was great to watch as he landed his biggest Brown trout ever.

Good times, I'm still smiling about that trip.. I will for awhile.

On another note, I'll be at the Walkerton Sportsman show again this year.. hope some of you drop by and say hello!

Fishing Report..Been a long time!!

Wow... I've been way too busy,or just too lazy..
To dispel some rumors,I'm still guiding!! I have not closed my business.I am still alive,although a bit beat up from building our house,an ugly shoulder injury(that will need surgery.. someday soon)and some weird weather patterns this year... lots of rain when we,(or I) didn't want it.
Yes, Fishing was pretty good, had a few guides that worked out this year. Met some really great people from all over the world. One thing that never stops amazing me,If you meet someone that fishes you have an instant connection, you meet someone that fly fishes... you have a fellow addict friend. I've had the pleasure of meeting a gentleman from Holland. His name is Pim. We spent a day trying for a Musky. This guy reminded me why I do what I do.To see the excitement in his eye's when we had a follow!! To hear him speak about that follow for the rest of the day!! The way his casting and placement of cast showed he meant business.. every cast was on the money!! We got some Pike but no Musky committed to our flies.
At the end of the day, I felt so good about having Pim in my boat. I felt good about what I did to get him into a fish he'd never caught..I just felt good... seemed to be a long time that I had felt good..
The house will be live able soon.I'll be able to focus on guiding again,with way more enthusiasm I'm sure.. Val will also be glad to be rid of me,if just for a few hours!!
I appreciate your patience and tolerance.
Look forward to seeing you at some shows this spring and on the river in 2011.

Man, I wish we could get more high water!!!
Not really, but I've been cancelling guides more than doing them.
With any luck things are back to normal.. with the rivers.
I've had a second shot, this was right in my AC joint ... Ya, thought after the first one was so easy, I'd try the second shot to see if that is the area that is causing all the problems.
Well, that hurt like hell, was close to passing out after the needle hit whatever he hit!!
Had a hard time driving home from Brampton(they just don't have cortisone in the Markdale area???) 3 days later and pain was down to 40% not bad!!
So I've taken it easy, trying to let things heal,been feeling pretty good,might be a good time to try rowing again, it was... for the time we had been on the river... today not so much.
We had a great day with Musky, 6-7 came to the fly.. some huge fish too.
So, I'm still taking it easy and am guiding.

Fishing report

Okay, ready for the "low down???
Yes, I've been injured. My Pelvis/hip is much better, walking without the cane but still not doing back flips!! The shoulder thing continues to be a ..... pain!
I'm getting another cortisone shot on the 26 Th... yahoo!! The first wasn't much help.. hoping the next works wonders!!
Okay.. fishing,
The waters in this neck of the woods are getting hot... not warm.. HOT!!!! in Temp only. Most of you know I don't guide when water reaches the 70 degree mark. So Bass and Musky it is!! I'm able to do one drift a week, more than that and the shoulder is sh.t for 4 days. With said, the Smallmouth and Musky fish will be outstanding this summer!!!
So, if you've got something in mind,and want to spend a day with me on the river??
Drop me a line, we'll try to put something together... I'm really missing my regulars,it would be great to see you all again!!

Fishing Report April 2010 - June 03 2010

It's been a long time,sorry for that. I've had a few accidents that have put into limbo for a few weeks.
I've been out very little,the spring went to summer too fast, at last time I checked the rivers close by, are or had been in the 70 degree range. Some of you know that I'm not doing any guides with water temps in the 70 range.
With all the rain and cooler nigh time temps I should be able to get some guiding done. The Brown Drakes should be done on the Grand and just getting ready to start on the Saugeen.
I'm almost able to stand for more that a few hours, my hip is still bruised and I hurt badly when I cough.. but it's getting better.
I'll be at that Walkerton show this weekend, if you are around please drop by and say hello.

Fishing Report

Again, Lots going on but no fishing for this guy.
I couldn't cast or hold a fishing rod right now. I've found out after an MRI that my ACL in my shoulder is done. I'll be seeing a surgeon in June to see what the next step is. My doctor has told me surgery is really the only option... she doesn't know me very well... I'll be guiding this year, I'll hold off on the surgery until next winter.
The house is coming together, working on the roof right now. I drive over the Saugeen everyday, it's one of the hardest things I do!!!
I'm sure when the season opens, I will find my shoulder is great.. I hope!! I'm booking up with courses and lots of guide bookings... I may even be able to afford the House.
I'm still not able to check emails everyday, we just had our Hydro hooked up.

I'm going to be at the first ever Walkerton Sportsman show this June 4,5,6 Th.

Fishing Report end of 2009

Happy New year!!
Into a new decade, with some very interesting things on the horizon.
I've got some big plans for the next year, I'll get into the details another time, some are still in the works.
One of these is a private mailing list. I'll be sending weekly emails containing conditions/hatches and any special offers I'll be having. I'll maintain the blog reports with conditions, the subscribers will get more frequent and more detailed reports. The website will be getting a light face lift, I'll be adding more fly patterns, for all species.

Fishing Report Nov 04 2009- Dec 15 2009

We are deep into winter now. The rivers are frozen or very close to it.
I'd like to apologize for the lack of posts, Val and I are very busy with trying to get back on our feet with this house. We've hired an architect, Neil Pitcher from Markdale. He's an amazing person,as is his wife Janet. They have help so much with the "what and how" it has been a real treat to work with them. To date we have had to replace our septic, it was far too small for the house. We've upgraded our Hydro service to 200 amp and taken it underground, the tornado had removed the overhead line from out transformer. We'll be picking up our Building permit Friday,and will be moving back to Mount Forest for a month or two.
So, the apology is for two things, first, my preoccupation with other things leading me not to be as diligent as I should with my business. Second, ( this is for clients that had booked me this year), my not being as focused as I have been in the past.
The next few months will be hectic to say the least, but it will end. We will be warm,safe and dry with any luck before the spring. I look forward to being comfortable with our situation next year and will be very focused on my guiding.
Again I thank all of you for your understanding.

BTW, I did have a reasonably good fall, Steelhead, for the most part had been taking smaller flies on the swing.. then winter hit... don't you LOVE winter????

Rivers are in great shape fish moving in and good
numbers of fishing on every trip.

I'm having a great fall, enough said!!

My new fly patterns have been working

pretty well, and it's great not to use an indicator.

seem to bother these first time Steelheaders. Carl

Fishing report Sept 10 2009 - Oct 06 2009

Let the Fall season begin!!!
Water levels in most rivers are on the way up!! Temps are on the way down!! With the full moon fish are moving into the rivers.
The Saugeen is 52.9 and the fish are on the move... quickly!! I'm finding most fish in fast water, and they aren't staying long.
The season looks good thus far, with more rain in the forecast and colder night temps you should be calling or emailing me for a booking.
Lots to do before the snow flies, on the house.
I've got some new fly patterns I'm working on. I've decided to get back to the old standard patterns I've used for years, why change when they work??? Good question.
I'm rally looking forward to being out on the rivers this fall, the trees are turning right now and are just incredible!!

Fishing Report Aug 27 2009 Sept 10 2009

Fishing has or was picking up before the heat wave.
I've not had time to venture too far from home.. or home waters. All my guiding time has been on the Saugeen in one form or another. A trout drift with Doug and his Father, a Bass drift with Dean and his father, a Musky/Bass drift with Graham and his Buddy Mike.
Fall/summer?? is a funny time, Graham and Mike did a long drift for Musky, a good 17 K's of casting big rods and big flies on the Last day of the Long weekend... Man that river had some pressure!! Not just from anglers but paddler's and pretty much anyone that has a boat was on the river.
The Saugeen is a great resource for many people, great place to paddle see wildlife, hell we saw a Beautiful mature Bald eagle on the lower river. It's also become a gigantic garbage can, I've never seen so many beer cans, water bottles and garbage.. every place we looked something was floating or sunk in the river. Good thing my clients have been on the river many times. If it was someone new to the area, or from another part of the world they would be disgusted.. as am I.
Okay back to the report, our trout drift on Saturday... (ya I know never do a drift on the Saugeen on the long weekend) Was great in the morning, got some good Brook trout, had the river to ourselves until about noon... then all hell broke loose... Doug was obviously upset with the amount of inner tubers on the section we did. It was non stop until the end of the day...
That being said, just minutes before the end of the day, we had a good wind blow the remaining ants into the river starting a few good rainbows feeding on the surface. Kieth(Doug's dad) had a Madam X on and Doug a Iso Dunn. Keith was the first drift over the rising trout, out it right on them and Bing ... fish on a nice 16 inch rainbow!! Then another showed itself... Doug's turn... one cast short drift and fish on!!
Mike from FlyFitters and I had a chance to play on the Saugeen for a few hours, great time. Mike and I get along really well, he's a great guy and a pleasure to fish with. We had finished a double boat guide and I had told him about the hatches I've been seeing on the upper river, so we put my boat in and did a "scouting trip". It started slow, but after the sun was off the river fishing picked up. Mike managed a nice 14-16 inch Brown! Great fish good fight and nice photo.

The Monday Graham and Mike did the long drift, we saw everything... paddler's for miles other anglers and Grahams' first Musky. Funny thing we had been tossing huge tube flies all day. I took them into a channel I know that has a decent Musky, after seeing the water and how low It was, I figured it was better to keep the bass thing going.. until Graham cast into a small pocket with good depth and had a big smack... no bite guard, the smallest fly we fished all day and you guessed it... his Musky!! Graham did an awesome job, the fish Jump and Graham managed to land the fish... sweet!!!
Just a few K's from Grahams'" new musky "spot...we saw a bright chrome Chinook Jump 2-3 times... Weird... but it's that time of the year.

Val and I are still trying to get things back in order after the Tornado. Still working with the insurance company try to get things moving forward... not an easy chore. Still we are healthy and not nearly as bad off as some.

Tornados and fishing Reports

It's been a tough week. Today marks the one week mark since the

tornado ripped through our front yard. Things are slowly coming back, Hydro,temporary land line (it's hanging from the last of our trees). I can't believe we got through without any injurys. Sulfur seems to be suffering some shock, I kept her very close as the Tornado hit. She was shaking so bad, and wanted out of the Laundry room... badly. I couldn't let her go.. you never know how bad things are going to get.I'llleave it at that, we're all healthy, and everything can be replace.

So fishing was picking up, the Ephoron hatch had stated last

week mixed with some Hex's. Gord and his wife Kim were

my last clients before the storm. Gord missed some good

fish,and some good fish missed Gords' popper!! Was a great

day, I truly enjoy this couple. Great people!!
After our day had finished, we headed back to Walkerton

to drop Gord and Kim at their car.When we Reached the

Tim's, the Ephoron hatch was in full swing, and I mean FULL SWING!!

Check out the photo's, they closed the Drive through!! As the attendant

opened the window to serve, the Mayflies piled in!!

Have a look at the photo's, looks like snow around the lights!!

Reports and all is good again!!

Hi,
Email is all worked out, back to normal... well as

normal as "I" get!! Well, It's been a busy couple

of weeks, lots of Bass guides and a over-nighter.
I sure would like summer to show up soon. The

Saugeen has dropped again to 66.8. Lots of Smallies

around.. with no appetite for anything, not

Even the infamous "full motion Hex",or

"full motion crayfish". It's easier to get Musky this year

than Smallies, I'm waiting for some photo's from the over-night trip.I'll get them up as soon as I get them. Rob and his Dad booked the trip many moons ago, and had been very excited to get out. Neither of them had a huge amount of Fly fishing experience, so after a quick tune up for his dad(had been 30 years for him) we headed out, Rob managed to hook two Musky, lost the first but landed the second, nice first Musky, 33 inches,jumped and cartwheeled!!
He also landed a nice 4.5 lbs smallie.
I'm crazy busy again this week, all but Friday is booked!!
I love my job, thanks to all that make this a reality!!

Fishing report July 11 2009 - July 27 2009

The summer that wasn't, what do you do/? Go brookie fishing In July!!
Tha Main Saugeen is at a all time low for July, water temps Saturday... 64.3!! Nice!!
Had a client out for a First cast course, Greg did very well, picked up casting like he'd been doing it for years. Okay, that was a stretch.. but he did do very well. We packed up after our Burgers(I hate burgers, have them pretty much everyday now) and off to the upper Saugeen. Just as we pulled up... the clouds let go.. we sat for 20 minutes in a massive rain storm. After it let up, we geared up and jumped in the river for some bug sampling, always like clients to see what is in the rivers. It always surprises people just how much food is available to the trout. Anyway, after a few quick pointers on mending and water reading, we fish a small pool just minutes from the access point.
Didn't take long before Greg was into a fish.. albeit a small chubb. So after about 20 more, we moved to the next pool for some nymphing demo's, Greg caught on quickly, just a few cast and he had his first Brookie on a nymph.. then lost it... but he had one on!!!
Off to the next pool, this one always holds 6 or more Brookies willing to take a dry. Tied on a Yellow Humpy and he was into his first Brook trout on a dry.. another cast or two, and another was willing. Nice fish, released to fight another day.
All in all, we had a good couple of hours on the river.
Greg, if you read this keep at it.

Was on the Saugeen with the drift boat 4 out of 5 days last week. The water temp has fallen again to below 67. Great fun trying to get fish to take anything that isn't crawling right in front of them. We've managed a few good smallies,and a decent Musky! The Musky was great, Steve and his wife Elsbeth (God I hope I got that right)
Booked me for two days. The First day was slow, we did manage a few Bass to come to poppers.. I think they might have even taken one or two, but fishing was slow. These two are great casters, on the money every time!! Here is a shot of Elsbeth with the biggest Bass of the trip.

With any luck this week will prove to be better.

I understand that almost everyone has been watching what they are treating themselves with. The "stay-cation" has become the catch word for this economy.
That being said I've put together an offer for these economic times. I've decided to offer recession pricing for the 2 person drift boat guides. The New price is $300.00 CND,(from 450.00) I've take the shore lunch out of the trip.You bring your own lunch and drinks. I also don't supply flies or gear, bring your flies and rods. The offer is good until the end of this year,depending on the response, I may offer it again for next year.
I hope this give some of my clients a chance for a day in the drift boat.

Fishing Report June 22 2009 - July 11 2009

So... It's Summer?? What happened to the nice hot sunny days???
This is great weather for the Trout but for fishing Smallies... not so much.
The forecast for the next week looks okay and should bring the Saugeen up a few degrees.
Was out for fun yesterday... had some nice fish hit poppers.The guy I was fishing with had never really fished smallmouth before so, through no fault of his had a hard time hooking them.. he did manage to get a Musky to follow his popper right too the boat then it saw my face and turned off... a typical response to my face... can't say I blame it...
The boat is... well.... it's never "done", but it's in the water and man is it a sweet ride.I am really happy with the new design, yes a bit heavier but still under 350 lbs. Have a look.
July is a great month for me I'm busy with guides, get to see my favorite Brother in law and his wife. Drake is healing after breaking his front leg... yes another 300.00 vet bill!!Good God will it ever end???

Fishing Report June 2 2009- June 22 2009

Looks Like summer is here,the Upper Saugeen reached a high of 73.9 yesterday. Wouldn't even think of sticking a hook in my little Brookie buddies mouth.
Good amounts of Iso's coming off on the Saugeen, notice that I'm leaving out the area??? That's because I've run into some ...how to say this...Fish killing Bastards??? Ya that works!

We've managed some good Browns and some great Brookies the last week, Graham stuck an 17-18 inch Brookies on a dry.. mid day last week. I had a chance to do some night fishing on Friday.. finished at 12:30. Too many Racoons mocking me from the bank, you know "Nice cast"... can you even SEE the fish??? What was the area?? not a chance.
Was a great night, caught my very first Juvenile Brown trout. What an amazing little dude, fat,strong and 100% natural. Also landed another brown just over 19 inches.Also hooked from the same pool, 3 rainbows and 4 brookies the Largest being 17 inches... I love big brook trout!!
With the weeks forecast Bass opener will be off the Chart!! The opener brings my first overnight trip of the year, Really looking forward to it.
Still taking bookings for Bass/Muskie trips. Also still doing plenty of "First cast courses, great to see the new interest in the sport.

The Boat... Good God the boat!! I'll post some photo's shortly! Can't say it's done... but can or do I ever??
Val... my love and I had a chance to fish together for the first time a week ago. We had fun.. I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching my wife cast,mend and set the hook!!
We took the dog's down the road to a very productive section for some river time... we ended up with too much river time with Drake. Drake loves the water.. he loves to find the strongest current and swims in the middle of the pools... great fun and he gets good and tired!!Limits the amount of rising fish we saw... but what can you do he's a puppy.

Fishing Report May 15 2009- June 2 2009

Finally, the Rivers are back or almost anyway.
With the cooler nights and plenty of rain the water temps are spot on for a fantastic early June.
Bob McKenzie had a small gathering of spey casters after the Calve this past weekend. We spent some time on the Speed in Guelph... and what a Drake hatch.. too bad the river has no real fish in it. The Hatch went on for hours, lots of bugs.
The Grand should start shortly with Drakes, Normally around the 4-6 of June.

No more confusion, business as usual,I'm still guiding full time!!!

What a crazy Steelhead season, more water... less guiding.. too many cancellations due to high water.I'll be happy when I can get to the Brown Trout water... nice calm easy, hatches... you know that old chestnut.
Still struggling with high water in the trout waters up here. I have been on the rivers with courses sampling and teaching. The hendrickson nymphs are crazy thick, they have been hatching but the water has been soo high.
I'm looking forward to getting some photo's on the site, the boat looks sweet.
I'm sure you'll love the new design.

The Hendricksons' are starting to hatch on the upper Saugeen, the Rocky is still moving along at a good pace.

I wish I had some fishing reports to give... but I'm still in the Garage/shop building my butt off.
The boat has been fully re-designed, It no longer has anything to do with the original plans.
I have lost the use of my camera... guess I have some moisture in the lens, so I'll have to get a new one for some more photo's.. Check back shortly for a new set of photo's .

Fishing Report March 02 2009- March 23 2009

Still in the Garage/shop

Here are some photo's of what I've been doing.

Ever steam bend 3/4 inch oak?? It isn't fun. I've

done this enough that I know the importance of a

good jig!! This one is huge and stout, good thing

as I had to stand on it to bend the oak!! The temps

is over the minimun of 212, but the shop was full of

the scent of cedar.. nice!!

After doing the New fly fisher, Colin gave a few

ideas that would improve the boat for anglers

needing more space... okay he just got frustrated

trying to move around... so I changed things

with his comments in mind... some anyway.

The rear angler now has 8 inches more floor

space. I've also made the oak brace 8 inches

taller... no more trying to get around them

with your knees.

Lots if changes with the boat.. lower sides, new dry boxes,

gunwales blah blah blah..I wish I would have this done earlier

so I can get out and do some fishing. I should have the boat

done in 3 weeks, I'm sure you have heard me speak about the

things I should have done when building... well most of those

"things" are done!! I've managed to weight most of what I cut out... over 80 lbs of plywood and glass... the boat should come

in at less than 300lbs!! I'll have to take it to the dump again for a true weight.

We still have plenty of snow in the bush.

With any luck... keep your fingers crossed!! We

will have plenty of water and a good amount of fishing

(Steelhead ) this season.

My May is almost done, if you had planned to book

this spring, I have only 3 days open.

I'm watching my New Fly Fisher show right now... like most people say

" we are our own worst critic" I'm very happy with the show...

I should have shut my mouth.. would have been a better show!!!

Look forward to hearing some feed back, I have no idea

when it will air so you'll have to watch all the shows..

too bad eh???

I'm looking forward to the guides I have booked for early June.

The Drake hatch on the Saugeen lasted almost 3 weeks last year.. should be excellent dry fly fishing.

Fishing Report?? Jan 22 09 - March 2 09

This is all about the boat. I've been busy re designing the boat, after 3 years with this I now know exactly what I need and want in the boat.

I've cut the bottom off, yep off!! I've done this to flatten the bottom and widen the boat. This will allow the boat to easily float in 4 inches of water. I've also taken all the interior parts out. The plan is to extend the rear anglers floor, take the knee brace up to 26 inches moving the brace ahead 12 inches. I will also replace the rear seat mount with a pedestal base with storage space.

The large dry boxes have been shortened to 14 inch from

16 inches. They have also been fitted with new tops and doors.

The front casting deck has been replaced, this was done to allow

me to cut the gunwales off and drop the front of the

boat 3 inches. That will take a total of 7 inches off the height,

allowing easier access for the front of the boat. The front dry

boxes have also been lowered and totally replaced with round

corners and a full shelf across the front. The lids are gone and access to the dry storage has been moved. The front seat position has been moved back 4 inches and the pedestal seat mount made larger.

So that is what I'm doing these days check back or feel free to email if you have questions.

Happy New year.
Not much to report in the way of fishing,we are in the "Throes of Winter" in the Grey/Bruce area. Many very cold nights has put a thick layer of ice on the creeks. As usual the Saugeen Valley conservation Authority has been watching the ice, fears of flooding are always on every ones mind with the anchor ice.

Just wanted to let everyone know I'll be at Bass Pro the weekend of the 7 th and 8 th of Feb. I'll be sharing some space with the other Bass Pro endorsed Outfitters and guides. Drop by and say hello. You to John H.!!!

I've been keeping busy getting my shop ready for a major boat overhaul, I'll be posting photo's as I get into the modifications. Some will be cutting the bottom off, removing the rocker allowing me to draft even less water. I'll also be changing the Dry storage boxes, new lids and dropping them down. Extending the Level floors at the rear and adding a pedestal seat. Replacing the Laminated ply knee brace with steam bent oak, some other stuff I'll need to work out before I post anything.

Looks like the economy hasn't really affected the Ontario residents too much, I'm getting plenty of calls and emails! Looks like 2009 is shaping up nicely.
I look forward to spending time with everyone and hope I see you at the Shows this spring.

I've just returned from a "drive around" looking at conditions for the last few guides I have for this year. Yep, doesn't look good,

everything is high and dirty... not just high and dirty but very cold, slush is a big problem, we are to get another 5-10 cm of snow over

the next 24 hours.

I had a look at our rain gauge yesterday, 4 inches!!! Yes, some of that was snow,but really at 4 inches of melt, that's a lot of very cold run off into the systems. I took some shot's at the Bighead and then, for fun went to the Beaver to have a look. As you can see in the photo's not too much slow water to fish and even less anglers... good thing I took my camera and not my gear!

On another note, please be careful when around rivers for a bit, the

water has dropped and left some very dangerous shelf ice along the banks... don't ask!! Still some pretty deep water under that ice!!

I've got some big projects planned for the up coming year, I hope to have some info posted over the next month. Thanks again for a good year.

Most of the rivers in this area have slush, the cold nights and days have really developed some bank ice. The river levels are good, we need a few days above freezing before I'll be out.

What a change from last fall, lots of water, almost too much. Like always, fishing has been hit and miss for the last few weeks.

The high water has filled the rivers with Steelhead, they are

not in the same holding locations as previous years. We've had to work a little harder to find them... but we have been finding them.The Lower Saugeen has seen some changes, the debris boom has let go with the high water and heavy debris, half of the boom is hanging over the dam. Lots of fish in the Saugeen below Denny's. It's big water and you need to really read the water to find those fish. The water temps have push many fish in the slower moving areas. I've been have luck with swinging smaller black spey flies with a dropper, single egg or small stone flies in black

We've been fishing a long leader with no sinking tips.

The Maitland has seen more high water than the spring!

We've had a few good days before the river was so high it

was no longer safe to drift. Mike V and I had another 2

boat day, a corporate event, the guy's had done some

Steelheading before, one was a good fly angler, try as

he might the other anglers with spinning gear were

getting the fish. Had a chance to spend a day with Ray

from Hook,Line and Sinker/ The first Cast. We drifted

the Maitland just days before it went off.

It had rained the night before, heavy at times, adding some colour down stream from our starting point. I managed to hook the first fish on the Maitland Leech. A nice Male, the water temps was mid 40's so this fish really put the boots to me. Check out the Video!!

I had a chance to fish the Bighead for fun as the river peaked a few weeks ago. I've never had a day when I've had the river to myself,

what a blast just to fish with no pressure from other anglers. Timing

is everything on the Bighead, be on the river as it's just starting to

drop with about 18 inches of vis... and you're in!

I'll post some photo's of fish we've landed, some are first time

steelheaders with first ever steelhead.

The season should go into Mid to late Dec, I'm booked to the

22nd of Dec,with a few days left here and there.

Try as I might this blog sucks, the pictures are all over the place and I just can't seem to get this to work. Sorry for the ugly lay-out

And We're Off!!!

Things are heating up, the Lower Saugeen has been producing some good Steelhead. The Notty as well. We could use the rain that has been forecast for this week. With the Water temps around the 46-52 range, fish are full of energy. My Wednesday guide had his hands full with very scrappy 4-5 lb fish. So much so that we didn't land anything over 14 inches!!! The Upper Saugeen still needs some time before we see decent numbers of Steelhead. What a difference from last Fall, good thing, as I don't think I could take that many cancellations again and survive the Winter... or at least I don't think Val (my Wife) could take it.

On another note, we now have a new addition to the Ontario drift boat guides family. A 11 week old Golden /yellow retriever pup. His name is Drake, as in Brown Drake. He's a hand full right now and I'm sure all these sleepless nights will be worth it in the long run. He seems to like being in the Boat more than Sulfur, well, he likes to sleep until lunch then do his business and sleep the rest of the day!! Man I'd love to to that!!

I still have a few openings here and there, so If you've wanted to get out for a day of Steelheading give me a call.

Trout season is now just a memory, Steelhead has begun!!
Now that I've taken the Grand River off the list of rivers I guide, I've added a new drift boat guide for Brown Trout. I won't go into any details but if you would like a truly unique adventure, drop me an email and I'll be happy to get you into some water you will be amazed with. The 2009 trout season will be one of great dry fly fishing for large brown trout... natural, big, beautiful Browns and a few good sized Rainbows tossed in for fun!!We have a huge amount of pristine rivers in this area, most with little or no pressure. Think out of the box in the 2009 season,give me a call and I'd be happy to take you out for a great day of trout fishing.
With the rain fall being above average, fish have been moving into our systems. With the river levels and cooler temps we had some challenging days, and some Fantastic days. The Musky bite was amazing, we had some multi fish days, lots of follows and many lost fish. I've come up with a new pattern, a large tube that has produce many Musky.. and of course the odd fish on a popper while fishing bass!!

Lets talk about The steehead situation, I've got a busy season this fall, and am really looking forward to having all my regulars and some new clients in the boat. The out look is great this year, lots of water with fish starting to move in . The early season will be great, we will be swinging some new patterns I've been working on. As you may know I prefer to guide water that has little or no pressure from other anglers, finding fish can be a challenge at times,but always well worth the effort by myself and my clients. Rivers are a changing thing, structure and pools change all the time, I've spent a lot of time scouting out some new water and double checking the old haunts to be sure we have the details needed to ensure quality days.

Again thank you to all the anglers that booked me for this past season. I truly enjoyed every minute on the water this past season .

Hey... can we get some more rain please???

What a great year for River levels, the down side , the Smallies are well dispersed throughout the river.Makes for some challenging Bass fishing. Bass fishing like it should be, know the spots, make a good cast and presentation.. you'll get your fish.

I have seen a huge amount of out-migrating smolts, I've never seen this many!! 3 years from now, we are going to have one amazing Steelhead run!! These little guy's are so hungry and aggresive they have been hitting our poppers.

We've had some great days with top water patterns, great sized fish nailing the flies, they are just not holding on!! Still makes me giggle like a little girl when a fish comes to a popper. The Hex's have started on some of the Smaller rivers in my area, we've also had some really good spinner falls of small mahogany's...and I mean small... 26's are about right. It's a very short spinner fall, maybe an hour, well worth the effort, no really big fish.. but who cares.. it's sipping Brookies in August!!!

Flyfitter's and I shared a drift Monday, great day, good people!!

Mike and I get along really well, it's great when a couple of guides

can do a drift together. With Mike's new Clacka and my boat we had a great day!!

It was the girls against the boy's.. the girls had the boy's hands down.. I think it was 7-3 with the largest fish going to the girls... an easy 22 inch smallmouth, with a first time smallmouth on a fly rod being 21 inches!!

Yesterdays drift was a slow day.. we did manage to raise a

Muskie with a popper, That fish was on a mission, when it

saw the boat it turned off at the last minute . But who cares...

it's a Muskie after a popper!!!

The Bass and Muskie season has really just started, Feel like changing species??? I've only got a hand full of days left for Aug/Sept

Fishing Reports, June 24 - July 16 2008

Man, I love small mouth bass!!
The Saugeen has been a blast, some good fish have come to poppers. Gotta love top water!!
The River has gone through some major structure changes, a few new channels and sweepers to watch out for.
Water temps up here have been rising well above the comfort zone for Browns and Brookies. I've taken the trout off the current angling list for now. I've also decided to not guide the Grand River. I figure with the other guide services have enough coverage on the Tailwater. With being so close to the many trout rivers and creeks in the Markdale area, I've got some very unique opportunities for anglers looking for something different.
The Saugeen down stream from Walkerton is currently passing the Out-migrating rainbow/steelhead smolts. If we want a good steelhead return, don't target these very valuable fish. The water temps are too high to release these fish with any good chance for survival.. it's our responsibility to ensure the smolts have the best chance to return in years to come.

Hello Fellow Fly anglers!!
What is with the Grand River??I'm no longer driving the 1.5 hours to guide it. I'll let the locals do that.

That being said, I'm posting some shot's of Browns and Rainbows I've got my clients into. None of these fish came from the Grand... or the Conestoga River. I'm not posting names or locations, if you
want to get into fish like these, well you'll just have to book a guide.
I'll be happy to take you out... although I may blind fold you....

With Bass opener this weekend, I'll be busy with a full week of guides, and then some!! Short of an eye appointment on Thursday. I'll be posting a report within the week. I'll be starting the Season off with Dr. Ian Martin and his son, they will be out in the Boat collection a drift Ian won at a Outdoor Writers of Canada event. I wanted to thank Ian again for driving up the bids on the Drift,
with guy's like Ian bidding,I'll keep donating trips. Thanks again Ian!!

Fishing Report May 18 - June 17 2008

Another Great month, thank you!!
We've had some fairly frustrating fishing in the Grand, one of the shortest Drake hatches I've seen. Couple that with the extra early algae bloom!! Yikes,even the stockers are having issues.

We have had SO much high water, the Saugeen has been up more often than down...it's a great thing. The temps are still holding well, on average we are getting 66-68 degrees.The Hatches as of late have been fantastic, I managed a couple of good nights with the Drakes... yes just a few days ago. Much later and much longer than the Grand River... with virtually no other anglers to compete with. The Iso's are just starting, these are huge bugs!! Can't wait to get a chance to fish them again.
All the Creeks are fishing well, I'm thinking of taking the Grand off my list and concentrating solely on the water around my home. So many quality Brook,Brown and rainbow trout opportunities, if you are looking for a truly unique experience, on one of the prettiest streams around drop me an email, I'll be happy to oblige.
Just a matter of days until Smallmouth trips begin, I've been so busy I haven't even thought of muskie...that's about to change, the Saugeen below Walkerton has been too high and dirty to really have a good day...gotta love that clay base and high banks!! It's getting better everyday and I look forward having clients hucking big flies to the banks holding one of the best fighters we fish for...in warm water.
Remember, we are all responsible for maintaining good land owner relationships, please keep our rivers and streams clean..take out what's left behind by the irresponsible anglers.
To continue having great sport fishing.. we need to practice catch and release. No better way to ensure quality fishing for us all for years to come.

WOW!!

What a busy start to the 2008 season, this is my second day off!! I'm not complaining I truly love what I do and thank all that enjoyed a day on the River with me to this point.

The Maitland was a tough go in the early days of the season, no big surprise it's been like that for 4 years. My first trip on the Maitland was not bad...not great, 4 fish landed 6 hooked. The Last 2 of the day were by far the nastiest fish ever... didn't show themselves just a couple of really good head shakes and runs ...and then...you guessed it... off!! The second trip was slow, with gin clear water and few fish left in the River we managed one nice fish with a fear of cameras...My client held it up for a quick shot and release...the fish just wanted the release. We had a great day on the river with a Maitland River Grand Slam.... a smallmouth,Carp and Steelhead!! Way to go Nigel...well done with the 2 hander.

I've been so busy teaching new fly anglers, it's one of the best parts of my job! I really enjoy watching people "Get It".. so much to learn... and students are always happy to learn it.

The Saugeen.. below Walkerton is a real challenge for fly anglers, Mike, one of my best clients, had a good start before the rain dirtied up the river,filling my boat with 6 inches of rain in 15 minutes!! Good thing the river got ugly early or Mike would have cleaned up.. this guy can fish!!

I've managed to stay clear of the Grand River Below Shand Dam.. had a couple of courses turn out very well with everybody catching fish... nothing too big but hey, the first fish on the fly rod is always a really good experience!I try to hold my courses in the Markdale area, some new water for most and great hatches, as of yesterday Hendrickson's, Grey Foxes and BWO's in huge numbers are coming off. The Bigger brookies are very happy to give my clients lots of chances to hook them. I've had a chance to fish once this year, a spot I really enjoy on the Saugeen. Was a tough hour, nothing rising, nothing really moving at all..what do I do when fishing is slow...??? you guessed it, get that Mouse pattern on!!! A beautiful 15" male Brookie was happy to eat my mouse!!! After a couple of quick photo's off he went into the dark hole he came from...I know this fish and his home...you wanna catch a Ontario brookie??

Give me a call things are just getting started!!

The Lower Grand was slow to start.. not for Steelhead but,for the Resident Rainbows...these fish can be some of the hardest fish to find and hook. It may take all day to find a fish worth catching..just like George did,he fished hard with some smaller fish hitting his fly then we found them... 2 beautiful fish a 16" and 19" fish full of power to give George a great fight and be real eased to do battle again.

With this Springs cooler nights and rainfall we are in great shape (so far) for a fantastic fly fishing season. With the River levels up a full foot from last year at this time and water temps at 54-56 degrees.... Trout will be very happy for some time yet.

If you have been thinking about hiring a guide..this would be the year to do it..

Fishing Report April 6-April 20 2008

Not too much to report, I've been busy getting the boat ready for opener..not for guiding for my wife and

I!! Many rivers are fishing well, The Maitland is very clear but still flowing well/ The Smallmouth have started to show up in the lower river.. try not hooking one! They do get thick from 21 down stream,but remember the season is still closed, catch too many with a C.O. watching, and you will be charged.
The Saugeen has bee producing some better numbers...of anglers... good fishing too, but a busy river as always.
The Notty has seen of the highest water levels in a long time, good for the fish. With all that water, the Steelhead would have been able to get to the spawning tribs to do what they do.

I've done most of the changes to the boat, it's mostly finishing now. New paint, more varnish and that will be it. Good for atleast two years,god thiong, it will take that long to get the skin back on my fingers!! I had to replace the steam bent oak knee brace, with the new gunwales the pressure had cracked the epoxy/cabosil bond. Weakening the brace too much to trust. I ended up making up a jig with a compound curve and laminated 1/8 th marine ply to get the shape. I was a little upset cutting the oak out of the boat, but it gave me an idea to improve my rod holders... you'l have to book a trip to see them!

Not so much a fishing report,but a boat build and up coming events report.
I will be at the Casting lanes Thursday(March 14) from 5 pm on in the Fly Fishing section at the 2008 Sportsman Show. I'd really like to see/meet some of you at the show.
As I write this, it's snowing again in Markdale, The snowbanks have reached a new high... 9 feet!! I have to walk out to the road check for traffic!Yep, I'm tired of winter.
That being said, we should have a great spring Steelhead season. Lots of snow=water and fish that didn't get too far in the Fall.Spring Bookings are filling my calender for both guiding and the First cast course.Shaping up to be another excellent year!!
The boat is coming along nicely, I have built some pretty heavy duty seats, they might even take abuse from Tim'r... or not!!
I 've made some pretty cool changes, lost the old style gunwales and made up new oar lock blocks from solid White Oak. Changed the seat in the stern, to a swivel mount with new drink holders. I've shaved some weight off the boat by removing some heavy items,no not you Tim'r. Changed my anchor rope system,cleaner and neater. I'll be re-varnishing the entire boat in about a week,and another coat of paint. Should look good as new!

The movie I worked on as a "fly fishing expert"(The Russell Girl) on was on the tube. It aired on the 27 th of January. My job was to teach the Main actors to cast like they had been fishing for years. Paul was casting like a pro with an hour,he's a very focused guy, wanting to learn and perform like he had been fishing for years. I didn't have too much time with Amber, although she was fun to teach. The entire scene we shot was 10-20 seconds long...if that! I was to show up on set at 9:00 am and be ready for anything. I supplied the rods and reels, a net and tackle box, we had a "fish wrangler" from Camp creek hatchery bring some really pretty Browns for the "release shot". Ben had the fish (14-24 inch Brown Trout) in the Back of a pick-up with oxygen and coolers full of ice to keep the fish happy. At 2:00 pm the Fishes water in was getting hot,and The the fish restless. It was a good thing we had the Craft Truck right beside us. It was a constant supply of ice as the Air temp was getting over 90 in the shade. The sequence was to be filmed on the Credit river, the Fish wrangler,( Ben) and I had been checking the River water temp and to be honest, we got worried as the water temp hit 80+!! We figured the fish would die as soon as they hit the water. Making for an ugly shot!Well, long story short, it was well after 7:00 pm when they did the filming so it wasn't too bad. We built a small "coral" with a seine net to hold the fish and acclimate them before using them in the shot. It worked out very well, the sequence was true to life. The film crew was great and did a fantastic job. Well done, if any of you get the chance, and see the movie for rent give it a watch.
Good News.. Markdale has high speed wireless.. so I'll be able to post more often!!

Snow Snow and more Snow!!
You gotta love all this precip, with the ground saturated and the aquifers full,we should have a fabulous spring!! We currently have 4 feet of snow in Markdale. Lets hope for a slow melt!!
I want to thank the the people that came out to the First Cast Fly shop in Guelph to see some of my fly patterns. It's always great to show new fly anglers patterns that work for multiple spieces.
The boat is getting some small modifications this winter. Mostly re-finishing/cosmetics and small repairs. I was hoping to cut the bottom off to decrease rocker but that will have to wait. That's what I love about building my own boat, no matter what,I can do whatever I want to it!!

Looks like we will have high-speed shortly, that will allow us the update and upload much faster.
I'll be posting photo's of the boat building from scratch,I hope you find them interesting. I will also be putting together a DVD this year.
My spring is looking good, increased interest in guiding and more people looking to learn to fly fish. Anyone looking for gift ideas should consider my courses,I've got something for everyone.
I look forward to getting out with all of you this year.

2008 has begun, not so much the fishing end of things. I have some work to do on the boat, I'm re-designing the seats,taking out some rocker and re coating the bottom on the inside. The varnish needs to be done,doesn't sound like much,but it will fill the next 2 months. I've got some new ideas/areas for this year, some water that doesn't get the pressure and should make for some great trips.

Hey John from Michigan, could you send an email address for the drift swap? I'd like to chat about the possibilities of that trade this spring.
I hope everybody had a great holiday and look forward to seeing you this season.

Rivers are or were frozen solid. With these high winds and warm temps the rivers will rise and possibly give us a crack at some steelheading in the new year.

The Fish have arrived!!

The Saugeen now has good numbers of fish

above Denny's dam. Water temps are stable at 33 degrees,with very little bank ice. With the colder night this won't last,so if you need your Steelhead fix better book a trip soon!

Cam purchased a trip for his Grandfather last year,as with everything Steelhead,timing is everything. We had a great day even with the

high winds and snow.

We have about a foot of snow in Markdale,expecting more with the next system.

Well, after 18 cancellations and still no real rain we are struggling. I refuse to take anyone out if the fish are not in good catch able numbers.
I spent a few hours looking for fish on the Saugeen this week. I have never seen the river in this condition this late in the year. The water is gin clear and cold at 38 degrees, some sections have good flow, and with any luck the rain in the forecast next week will bring the levels up. The ground is saturated so any rain should be running into the rivers.
I will again be at Bass Pro,The White River fly shop next Wednesday, I'll be tying more steelhead patterns. I will also be tying some leaders that I use for both swinging and indicator fishing.
With this years poor fall conditions, a good gift idea for the spring is a drift boat trip for steelhead. I'm sure with the weather patterns I've kept over the years this bad fall will make for a great spring season. Keep that in mind when you are suggesting Christmas gift ideas to your loved ones.

I must have done something to really anger the Rain Gods!! Maybe Mother Nature has a chip on her shoulder...who knows. It's been a long time,or it seems anyway ,that we have a fall this dry, or maybe I just can't remember..I am getting older.

The Upper Saugeen has again reached a near stand still with flow, even with the rain we have had nothing has gone up at all.

The Maitland...I can't even talk about it,

The Lower Grand is at a good temp, and I have heard all kinds of stories about Steelhead. I have a hard time thinking that fish are moving above Caledonia with the river at this level..but stranger things!!

The Notty, thank God for the Notty! Fish and flows are stable. The Steelhead are enjoying the water temp, and not slowing down at all. Some decent pods of fish have entered the river, not slowing much to be caught. I got out for some fun fishing after a couple of very slow days in the drift boat to find some fish with one of the best Steelhead anglers, no.. he's one of the best all around angler's I know. Cam Moore, this guy is a ton of fun to fish with, I always enjoy his company and look forward to any time on the water with him. We fish the Notty in some water that we figured fish would be holding, After a early and slow start to the day we found a few fish.

All told we landed a dozen or so Steelhead, Cam tagged this fish fairly early on float gear.

We had a great day and covered a ton of water, it's not always about the numbers, I still enjoy a few fish with some great company. I managed a few fish on the fly gear, even a decent Brown trout, that was a nice surprise. I didn't think the water was in any condition to swing flies so all the fish came on egg flies under an indicator.. pink and orange. The fish on the right was a fly caught fish, both of these fish spent more time out of the water than in!!

With any luck Mother nature will mellow out and give us the rain we need. Patience is the key, but I personally am running out of that.

If your out and have some good success, remember these fish are precious and need to be released to continue the cycle. Let them go, for future angling opportunities.

Now that Trout season has closed,and steelhead season is at our door, I want to thank all that booked with Ken Chandler fly fishing adventures. It was truly a difficult , strange,but rewarding trout season.

It seems with the rain we've received the last few days, only a very small amount of it actually has hit the rivers. With two days on the Notty and only a few fish to show for it,temps still in the mid 60's, and rising water levels and colour it should be very soon for that river. Some fish are hitting dark spey flies on the swing, most are coming on peach egg patterns. All fish are being caught in fast water, and not fighting like they should due to the warm temps.
I stopped by The Beaver and bighead to have a look....at what!! Man they are still very low and warm. Not a normal fall by any standards, anyone have a good rain dance ??
The Forecast for the next few days will bring the night time air temps way down to single digits.
It's a start, but rain will be the big factor.

For anyone that is interested, I will be at Bass Pro Shops every third Wednesday on the Month.
I'll be In the White River fly Shop tying some of my best producing fly patterns and giving seminars on how I fish for Ontario's warm and cold water fish. I'll be in the Shop the 17 th of October, tying steelhead patterns from 6-8 pm.

With November almost completely booked and the later part of October full, now is the time to call if you have been thinking of booking a steelhead trip. My fly boxes are full and the boat is ready for some steelhead!!

Fishing Report Week of Sept 4 - Sept 11 2007

Finally some much needed rain!!

It's not likely enough to bring the river up to trigger runs of salmon, but it's a start! The colder night forecast for the week should make a big change in the rivers.

The Grand River, it's still too warm for my liking, 70 degrees on Sunday. The upper section has had some great caddis hatches, #16-20 in Tan and Olive. Good amounts of fish keying into the emerger.

The Rocky Saugeen is at 70 degrees as well, with any luck the temp will drop and the Brookies will find themselves feeding on whats left of the Hex's and Isonychia. The hex's last week had been heavy at dusk. Not one fish rising for these big flies. The Iso's are heavy right now. the last hour of day light has seen some fish brave enough to move for a meal. The bats are eating really well before they head south...can't wait till they are gone...not that I don't like them...just not in my House!!

The Main Saugeen is still at a trickle, my Brookie spot has seen some heavy traffic with very few fish over 10 inches left. Make me sad to see natural Brook trout taken from a river that is struggling to maintain a decent population.

The Smallmouth have begun to school up, "double header" are the words of the day. Big fish are starting to pool up and are willing to eat for the up coming winter months. The Muskie have been more cooperative with lots of follows and some great takes.

The Notty around Angus has some good numbers of fish, and anglers, I don't fish this area, at least you can get into some fish if you can stand the crowds. The lower Notty has seen some very small Pushes of salmon heading into the river. With the rain... we might see more fish entering the system.

Had a visit from Fly Fitters Mike Verhoef yesterday, we talked about the level of the Maitland.

He has never seen the River so low, not in 37 years.... I think he's older than that, but live that dream Mike!!

As promised, Mike B sent me a CD of the photo's they took on the Drift trip down the Saugeen.

The shots just don't do the fish justice. If you know Mike he's a big dude, this fish took him all over the river while he giggled like a school girl...great job Mike. Mark was Mikes fishing partner,

he got into some great fish too! Same time next year guy's??

Okay.. this is obviously not the fish, it is however the smallest fish of the year!!

Fishing Report Weeks of Aug 20- Sept 4 2007

Smallmouth Fishing has been outstanding!!
The Saugeen continues to produce some truly huge fish, Mike can attest to that with one of the largest fish I've ever had in the boat! I'll post the photo when I get it from Mikes camera.
The Maplehill Dam continues to be a problem with the flow changes as drastic as a 2 foot drop within minutes. The Rainbows have been showing up in really good numbers in the Saugeen feeding heavily as they head to the lake. I've also seen some good sized Browns feeding on Dries in some areas.
The Rocky has had a good Hex hatch the last few evenings. Super tough fishing with all the growth in and around the River. These big flies bring out the best of the best in the Rocky!
That's all I'm going to say.
Still waiting for the Nooks in the Notty to be in catch able numbers. Fished it a few hours last week with nothing to show for it. The flow is okay,lots of guy's looking for the fish but nothing to be seen. I'll post another update as I will be on the Notty again this week.
My Steelhead season is going to be crazy with very few days still open.
If you have been thinking about getting into the drift boat with me this fall,better get an email off soon.
We are in the last month of trout fishing.Get out and have some fun as it's a long winter without resident trout fishing.

Fishing Report Weeks of Aug 1 - Aug 20 2007

I know I know...update the Blog!!!!
This has been one of the best Months I've had! Thank you to all that have booked a wade or drift boat trip!
The cooler nights are a welcome relief, to all species in this part of Ontario. The Upper Saugeen has very little water, can't imagine how the Brookies are surviving in this drought.
The Rocky Saugeen, with it's heavy tree cover, has been at better temps but I will not fish the River until the water cools. Val and I often make a trip down the road to let Sulfur cool down and do some fishing on her own...(mostly for frogs). We have seen Trico's, Olives and Mahogany dunns, with some trout feeding very close to dark.

The Grand's trico hatch has started, but be ready to be on the river in the dark. We fished it today (Aug 20) with dunns and emergers in the early hours, then to spinners after 9:00 am.
Some good fish rising, but nothing huge. It's challenging fishing at best and a lot of fun.

The Notty is still very low, running at 70 degrees, we really need some rain! The cooler nights might start bringing in more fish. Lets hope for larger Salmon this year!

I'll be out for the next 3 days, I'll post a report early next week.
I'm Drifting for smallmouth and muskie and am sure we'll have a good week.

Tired of fishing low water for picky trout??

Fishing Report July 27- Aug 1 2007

A quick up-date.

The Saugeen is fishing great!! John booked a full day on the Saugeen to try these hard fighting fish,and after a slow start he was into some great fish!!

John has asked I no longer call him my "Poster Child" so I'll just call him the best student I've ever had. Completely focused and determined to get the most out of his time angling. I truly enjoy his company and willingness to learn. It's a pleasure to have John in my boat.

It's time for Hex's on the Saugeen. If you have yet to experience this hatch on the Saugeen now is the time!!

The lower sections are getting good emergence and spinner falls,with smallies keying into these good sized meaty flies. This is an evening thing,but well worth booking a drift boat trip for dry fly action.
I have not been On any Trout waters.With this heat, I'm sure temps are beyond what I will subject clients and fish to. The Trout Creeks in my area are very low and warm,not worth wetting a line. The Rocky Saugeen is beyond fishing temps. It's all bass, bass,bass, not a bad trade off!!!

I have limited dates open,call today to book your trip!!

Fishing Report July 17- July 27- 2007

Wow! it's getting way too warm out there.
The Grand is fishing well. The early am hours and the evening are the times to be on the water. Water temps continue to climb close to my cut-off point. Monday at 5:30 pm it was 72 at the Trestle!! Had good success with Caddis, Cranes and Cahills after the sun was off the water.
The Rocky Saugeen has hit 70, Still fish rising in the evening to Iso spinners,I will no longer angle the river with the temps that high. It's never worth the possibility of killing a Brook trout
Right?
The Saugeen has been good for smallmouth. The Rain we received last week, the River had come up and gone off colour. I was very fortunate to have a day out with the staff of Canadian Fly Fisher magazine. Although fishing was slow, due to the conditions ,we had a great day on the water.
Derek and his buddy Paul cashed in on a drift I had donated to the Co-operators for the Children's Make a wish foundation. They are great anglers,good casters and after a short tune-up with presenting flies,they were on the money!! We had a good day and a lot of fun.
Dan from Montana had an introduction to smallmouth, he's never fished for bass with a fly rod. Why would he when he's got a fantastic fishery in his backyard. This guy was awesome,he could place a fly on a dime!! Again, with practicing presentations to smallies he got some good fish.
Dan, if you read this thanks again, I had a great time on the River with you and enjoyed the conversation and all the info on your beautiful River.
In the Lower stretches of the Saugeen the Hex's are just starting, won't be long before the Hatch is hard and heavy...anyone not yet experiencing this, has got to get out for an evening of dry fly action to these hard fighting brutes.

On a side note, the T.U. work day we had on the west branch on the Rocky was a huge success
I was so into slogging wood out of the river that I forgot to take pictures of our day. The New fly-Fisher attended the work day with cameras in hand,so you may have a chance to see what we did on the show. Please,If you ever get the chance to do some in water work with the Trout unlimited people ,get out and spend a few hours to help enhance our cold water fisheries, I'll bet you feel as good as I do.

Fishing Report June 25- July 17 2007

Bass, Bass,Bass and Muskie!!

Mr. Cooper shows us how it's done!! He cast the 10 wt all day and it payed off!!

We've been busy with warm water species, smallmouth fishing has been excellent to say the least. I've seen some truly huge bass on the Saugeen.

Had a long day on the Saugeen Monday with two guy's from London, Ruben and his new fly fishing friend Dave. Dave started off slow, but quickly picked up casting the fly gear.In no time he was hooking smallies with the 6 weight. Clousers and crayfish with a couple of fish taken on Ruben's flies! Never met a smallmouth that didn't want a crayfish. Dave found that out when he cast to a large boulder, his fly was met by a 18 inch bass as the fly dropped!

The Upper Saugeen has reached it's summer flows, and temps. It's become almost impossible to find a brook trout or brown in the system.

The Rocky has warmed up, still below the 65 degree mark.The evening fishing has been fair to good on small BWO spinners and cahill spinners. The Happy Trout Chapter of T.U. has a work day Wed the 18th of July, I'll post some shots from the day.

The Grand River, what can I say. If you know what sections to be on,you can get some great fishing in. Be prepared to fish late...and spend some time on the banks watching.. I did with Don and Rob well worth putting in the time, Don missed a big fish and Rob hooked this 21 inch fishing on a Iso spinner

Had a chance to head to the Conestoga, water levels look good. I didn't have time to fish,but looks like the water to be on is up-stream of county Rd 12.

We need Rain, the small brook trout creeks have come to a stand still, no flow and algae getting a good foot hold makes fishing not an option.

The Sydenham below the Falls has great tree cover so, it's still fishing well, not great. You still have to work for a fish,but it's so nice and cool in the bush. Nymphing has been the a good producer, caddis and small pheasant tails are what have been best on 6X tippets.

Maitland, if you know the deeper pools you'll get sore from fighting smallmouth.

It shouldn't be more than a few weeks before Chinooks start moving in to a well know River

We will however, need a good couple of days of rain to start that small and early run of fish.

All in all thing are still good, if you want to make the most of your trip out,give me a call and I'll be sure to make your day worth hiring us.

Fishing Report Weeks of June 5 - 25, 2007

First, I need to get this off my chest.
Three times I have been guiding on the Grand River, a single person, a double and a 3 person corporate deal. I took these people to the Upper River during the week thinking that it would have less pressure, and it did.
All three times I had another person or person's come into the pool I was fishing and without asking or saying anything to me or the clients (other than anyone fish this side?) start fishing directly across from me! Not only that, but no one was fishing up or down stream from us!The sad part is, one of the guy's was a guide, from a local fly shop with a student!! Not the way I would teach etiquette to a new fly fisher. This breads the same behaviour. Completely unacceptable!!
Lets take everybody into account while fishing, if you see someone fishing a pool, move to another spot..simple solution.

Fishing is still good on the Grand, watch for large fish rising. The rise forms have been deceiving as of late. I've hit a couple of fair spinner falls, with few fish on the bugs. Have a mix of spinners Iso's and Foxes have been the ticket for us.

The Saugeen river is now out of the question for any trout, in the head waters the temp are above 75 degrees!! Good Bass and Muskie temps, and this fish are willing and ready.
I've had a few drift boat guides on the Saugeen and managed Muskie and good numbers of bass.
The deer flies are out in full force, so if you are booking or out on your own be ready for some heavy slapping of skin!!
The rocky has been keeping cool and the hatches are great, still an evening fish with Iso's Cahills and olives bring the fish out of hiding. I love that River, it's tight fishing, but well worth the effort.
I plan to fish the Notty soon for smallmouth , this river always fills the bill for good numbers and sizes of smallies and occasional pike.

I've been busy in my area and have not been able to get to the Conestoga or some of the other rivers for a good report.
Be sure to check out "The First Cast" website as they have been able to get on those Rivers with more frequency.

If you have yet to get in the Drift boat, booking dates are filling fast with the smallmouth opener, call soon to book your trip.

Fishing Report Weeks of May 20-June 5, 2007

As of writing this report the Saugeen water shed has received plenty of rain. The Upper River is no longer fishable. Too Bad, I found this pod of Brookies before the River level climbed to un-fishable. I counted 28 fish from 8"-14" all just hanging around in this pool.

Rain is a good thing, as this will bring water levels and temp back to appropriate levels for this time of year. The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority reports precipitation levels down 40% from a normal year!! It's too bad the water is up, as the Green Drakes had just started on the Upper Saugeen. The Drakes always brings out the bigger Brookies.The Browns will find their way out of the under-cuts to eat these big meaty flies.

The temperature in the Saugeen and Rocky Saugeen was 5-9 degrees above normal.

The Grand River has had some amazing hatches and spinner falls, with fish still needing to key in on them. I've had clients out for evening fishes, and have had very heavy spinner falls. After waiting in prime areas till dark nothing but small fish had been rising. Caddis was the ticket with the two guy's I had out, We fished below the second line, good old "Caddis Kate" made her presence known to one of the angler I was with. She quickly made short work of that Caddis emerger and wrapped it around a rock.. and so it goes...

I have had a chance to fish once since the last report on the

Grand and managed one fish on Hendrickson spinners.

Muskie season is now open, Did a drift on the Saugeen with a good friend , he managed a nice 38" fish, ten minutes into the drift..and that was it. Looks to be a great year for Smallmouth as we had seen some huge fish close to the banks as we cast to prime areas with the big gear for Muskies.

The Conestoga is picking up, Take Caddis and find a riffle,that's all it seems to take on that river.

I"ve heard(not had a chance to fish it) that the Credit Is fishing good, Now that everybody is on the Grand River, It may not have the best hatches right now but lots of river to fish and less people.

With this current cold front your guess is as good as mine as to what is in store for us.

The Grand has not changed the flow rates still around 3.5 and should be clear,it will all depend on in-flow.

FISHING REPORT WEEKS OF MAY,06-20,2007

WOW!!

What a Crazy couple of weeks!!

I've been spending my spare minutes concentrating on my local streams,so lets start with The Saugeen systems.

The Hendrickson spinners have been so thick, Val and I spent a few hours casting #16 Hendickson spinners to Brookies, very selective Brookies. These are not big fish but can you pass up on a beautiful natural Brook Trout from an area like the photo?

The Grand River Tailwater has had the best Hendrickson Hatch I've seen in years!

Too bad the fish can't recognize these bugs as food, We've seen blanket hatches with few or no fish rising. With these warmer temperatures the fish will start keying in on spinners.

Watch for an evening with some cloud cover to keep the spinners from the trees.

I had a couple of hours after a course and managed to stick a 21" Brown on a reversed spinner

Nice fish,and met a truly nice gentleman in the Can Robert area. Blair is a great guy and fishes the Grand often,he shares his time with his wife who loves the areas B&B's. We stayed late waiting for the spinners to fall, Blair had a couple of shots a big fish in an area that he has never fished. Blair made a great cast, the fish came to his spinner, Blair was a little slow on the hook set stuck the fish for a second...and that was it, we both figured the fish to be over 20" the first big fish Blair has had a shot at with a dry fly..next time Blair ..we'll get him!

The Conastoge River has been good to fly fishers, spend some time in pools below riffles. Caddis seem to be the ticket.

The Credit Fished well early,but is now winding down. Some good fishing can be had to the dedicated fly fisher with a good nymphing style.

I'm looking forward to some great days on the Saugeen targeting Muskie and Big Smallmouth,

Remeber to keep the fight times short, the longer you fight a fish the higher the lactic acid build up, the lower the survival rate. Be sure to revive the fish well, let the fish decide when it's time to swim away. If the fins have a reddish colour to them and the fish is not staying up-right hold the tail gently, keeping the fish in the current and slowly move the fish back and forth in the current. Doing this will slowly allow the acid build up to disapate,allowing the fish to move freely on it's own.

Fishing Report Week Of 28-05th

Fishing on the Grand River tail water has been tough, with the clear water and cool temps the Browns have been fairly difficult to come to a fly. Nymphs and big rabbit strip streamers seem to be getting most of the fish. Isopod and Hendrickson nymphs are getting Browns in the Upper river, fish deep and slow covering the water well,did I say Patience in the rule?
Steelheading opening week was also a low catch scenario. Water levels are very low in the Maitland,with the Saugeen dropping fast and the Lower Grand almost at summer levels and Clear as gin. The water levels are good in the Notty,with drop back steelhead starting to leave the system. Watch the water temps,with the sun as intense as it is these fish will find the way back to the colder water of the lake quickly. Morning temps in the Steelhead Rivers has been
54-56, by noon the are climbing to 60-65. A low pressure system and some rain is desperately needed as our spring run winds down.
The Brook and Brown trout fishing in the Markdale area has been good, Stone fly and Hendrickson's have been coming off in moderate numbers. Doing some walking is the rule, finding fish in the deeper pools and runs in this clear water is fairly easy. Presenting flies up-stream is a must staying low and quite will get some respectable Trout.

fishing report week of 20-27th

I've stayed away from the rivers cause i can't handle the crowds of opening weekend.
that being said,I drifted the Maitland on Sunday with a friend,saw very few fish and hooked even less.
Water levels were starting to drop,and the high pressure system, gin clear water
and the huge amount of anglers fish were in shock.
The Saugeen was a zoo, like most rivers this weekend. I'll have more information on the Trout Rivers for the next report.

Fishing Report Week Of April 15-20

Once again the weather is playing a major role with conditions. We had another 4-5 inches of Rain and Snow, last week.The Rivers sky-rocketed and are close to being back to "normal" for this time of year.

The Saugeen River; lots of water, good flow temps are up and down like a yo-yo.They have started lifting fish, at Denny's.

Maitland River; Again was too high to fish mid-week but back down to high but fish able.
Temps are up and down but between 36-42 degrees. Fishing is slow, it can only get better.

The Notty; Man, did this River get ugly, It's dropping, but dirty...big surprise. No fishing data for the Notty, sorry just not worth the trip.

The Grand river; I'm going on what I've heard on this one, which isn't much. Still cold but the levels are good.

Should be a great spring for Drop backs, all this water is a great thing lets hope we don't drop the levels too fast.

Fishing Report week of April 9-13 2007

The rivers are coming back into shape. Although the snow we received the last couple of days is now melting with the light rain it will change the river levels and clarity.

The Saugeen, as of Thursday is slowly going up. The River has fish, and lets hope it
keeps some good visability

The Maitland, is also on it's way up, remember its only open to fishing below the #21 bridge.

The Notty, Is steady and should be okay without any rain. The Notty can be a tough River to find fish,but with the cooler water temps concentrate on the slower pools.

The Lower Grand, is also holding steady,but for how long?With the high water this fall it may be difficult to find fish in the main River. The Grand is open from Caledonia down stream.
Be careful not to get within the 25 meters of the Dam... the C.O's have no mercy , can't blame them.

Take a thermometer with you,check the temp and you'll know what water to fish. Slower for cold water...medium to fast water above 45 degrees. Remember, it only takes a 1/2 of a degree to change inactive fish to active fish.

Funny how things change

Well we can disregard the last post. The Saugeen is well on it's way to high and dirty...again!
The Maitland is going the same direction, with the 1.5 inches of snow we've got in the last 4 hours,It's going to be interesting to see what happens over the weekend.
The Notty is also going up and off color, Should be out for about a week. Depending on the temp
it may slow the run off and clear the rivers a bit.

Fishing Report April 01-06 2007

The Saugeen has dropped and is clearing as of Sunday. We are expecting more rain, that will affect the river again. Water temp in the Saugeen is 43 degrees,with about 12" visability.
A majority of fish are being caught in slower water close to the bank.
The Maitland had dropped and is fishable only down stream of the #21 bridge. The cold water temps are keeping fish in the slower water.
We still have about a foot of wet snow in the bush,in Markdale,and are expecting more cold temps and snow before the weekend.
When fishing the dirty water,remember the fish have a hard time passing the silt over the gills.
Fishing close to the bank will produce more fish as the silt level is lower in these areas.
Look for slow moving pockets and eddies,fishing with pale pink egg patterns and black stones has been working well. The tiny winter blacks are hatching in huge numbers,be sure to have some #16 nymphs in your fly box.

Thread, 6/0 uni thread Pink or red

Tag, Silver flat mylar #12

Rib, Oval Tinsel x-strong medium

Body, Micro Chenille White

Wing, Magnum Rabbit Strip (cut to a point to tie in)

Collar, Large Cactus Chenille Pink

Hackle, Pink Saddle hackle (to be wrapper in front of collar)

Hackle#2 White Burnt spey(soaked in hot water,strip one side,tie in at tip of feather)

Over hackle, Pink mallard flank (strip one side tie tip first)

It's a long list,but I've taken 10 years to get this fly perfect. In various colors (Black, Purple, White and Olive) this fly produces on every River I've fish.

The Pink Matuka spey can be a tricky fly to tie first time,so be paitent and take your time.

It can also be tied in smaller sizes,the 3/0 is what the size I fish with the two hander and a heavy tip.

Hot Great Lakes Steelhead Patterns

Hi everybody,

We had a problem last week,actually a few problems. The website was lost,my hosting service had a hard drive melt down and lost everything on the drive. I apologize for the down time and hope it doesn't happen again.It took sometime but we are up and running again. I"ll be working with Peak rotary vises, for the Peak Pro-staff team. It's a new year and I'm looking forward to having a great year.
The extended season Rivers are now closed and we are down to to River mouths,except the Notty,that has a good amount of river to be fished. The Steelhead are in the wintering pools
but fresh fish continue to move in the rivers.I can't believe the amout of big fish that have been entering the Rivers this year.
This has truly been a fantastic year for Steelheading.

Well,it's winding down..The season,not the fishing!!
The Steelhead Rivers have been running great with healthy average sizes of fish and good numbers of Steelhead still to be had. I won't tell you the end numbers for this week cause you won't believe me.It will take some time to get the stink out of the boat!
I've got about 30 new photo's to post,so please be patient and I'll get them up soon,just takes a really long time with dial up.
Check back soon I'll be on the River again Wednesday/Thursday and working on booking

My Fly-Fishing Poster Child!!

This Is John.H he is one of the most focused and determined fly-fishers new to the sport!
John started a few months ago with my "First Cast" course on the Grand river. He took the
follow-up"First Cast Refresher",on the Credit River and hook and landed a beautiful 17" Brown Trout.
He then purchased a 6 wt. for Smallmouth. He used it at a friends cottage with great success. This was his second Steelheading trip with me,the First was on the Maitland,John landed a huge 12.-lb Hen that made him sweat. We took a few pictures and the fish was off. Unfortunately,I had some software issues and lost his first Steelhead photo's. With John's good nature we decided to go and try for another good Steelhead. This time on the Saugeen River, I showed John a reliable technique and within a few cast John tied into this beauty. Well done John!!
Watch this guy,he's going to be a hell of a fly-fisher. It won't take long.

Best Bass Drift ever!!

This is Amy, She wanted to take her Dad fishing for his Birthday.
They fished together a long time ago, but as things go , it had been some time since the last fishing trip . Amy thought a day in the Boat would be a great Birthday Present.
Funny how things work out, Amy hooked the best fish of the trip.. what a great fish!!
Brad had a few fish on a "hulla popper" just not a big as Amy's fish!!

Long time coming

What a crazy month,I apologize for the lack of posts.
The Rivers are running bank full with plenty of Steelhead.
I fished the Maitland with a good buddy John Warner a while ago and we managed a few fish.
This one took a matuka spey in hot pink on the swing...hammered it too!
John hooked his on a one of his own creations.
Felt good to get the bend back into my Sage 9141 spey rod
Notice how Sulfur had to squeeze into the photo.
Last week I fished the Saugeen for a few hours, managed a few silvers on spey flies.
The Saugeen is running perfect with plenty of fish and great temps. If this keeps up
I may have to fish again this week!
Remember it won't last forever, so book a day in the drift boat or a wade trip soon.

When It Rains

We are now finally getting the rain we needed,and rivers are on the way up.
September was a slow month for fishing and guiding with the new house and all.
But we are almost in and fishing will be going full strength this weekend.
We had some good day's in September although few and far between. The Saugeen smallmouth are still proving to be very happy to eat our flies.
Had the Sage guy's out on the Maitland this past Sunday,not a banner day but we managed some decent smallmouth and a Chinook. The water was low and clear in fact I was whipped at the take out after pulling the boat over many rocks!!
This rain will change that!!
Check back in the next day or two.

The Salmon/Steelhead in the Georgian Bay rivers are trickling in. Booking for Steelhead and Salmon is close...within a week! This is what I found today. This fish was so fresh..it took me well into my backing!!

Steelheading not far off!

With the Air temps falling off at night the Steelhead and Salmon rivers are getting
closer to the desired temps!I've been on the Notty a couple of times,managed a nice silver Salmon on the Spey rod. I had two other fish hit my swinging fly so hard it left me shaking!

What a Week! Three drifts in as many days. Two rivers, three different sections, great casters, and a ton of Smallmouth Bass!!!
The Saugeen is fishing great,my clients and I had seen better than 40 fish and some Bruisers!
The Grand River From Brantford to Cockshot Bridge is low and fish have congregated in pools.
The Guy's from Wilson's in Toronto had a good day with one Smallmouth over 18" and that's a Great fish for that section of River!
Book your drift boat trip soon, open days are getting few and far between!
